Scenario Writing Studio

Scenario Writing Studio was a redesign for an author/screenwriter with whom we’d worked before on True Story Ink. There was a lot of content on her existing site, but it wasn’t managed very well, was not very search engine friendly, and was impossible for her to make even minor changes without having to get access to the code and use an FTP program. What’s more, certain features she wanted to offer — like the ability to create an RSS feed for updates — would be impossible on the static site she had been given. We’d proposed when we started working with her to redo the entire site in WordPress, and the launch of her new book and ghostwriting seminar was the perfect opportunity to do it.

Like True Story Ink, the site was to have a strong film noir feel, but it also needed to be obviously a site for an author. The design we went with is really all about light and dark, and in that way, carries a strong film noir aesthetic. One of the things the old site had was two sidebars that varied depending on what page you were looking at. It was used to navigate sub-sections of pages, offer more information relevant to the current page, or give contact information. For the redesign, we created a similar feature, building 15 pairs of sidebars for various pages, making them all widgetized (and therefore, fully customizable from the back-end), and all called from a single generic page template using a series of if statements (e.g. if this page, display this set of sidebars).

We designed customized graphics for her social networking links, and customized “enroll” PayPal buttons for her online classes to fit with the design of the site. We wanted everything to fit with the mood of the site and Netflix’d Chinatown to give us some extra visual inspiration in the early development of the site design.

This wallpaper is what happened when I set out to do something with our holiday lights texture photos. It’s colorful and fun and you can look at it many different ways, since there’s lots going on. I’ve been catching myself staring at it on my monitor many times, dreaming of a connect four game that is as attractive and chaotic as this looks.

Ho Ho Ho! Merry Non-Denominational Winter Holiday!

As we teased last week, here’s the full archive of all 50 light textures that we’ve posted in two parts (you can check out previews of part one here, and part two here). But, because you waited patiently and were such good little boys and girls, we bundled a special surprise into your stocking: you can also download a bonus snow texture pack featured below. You can see one of these textures in action in our popular holiday Blogger template, Advent. Snow is often challenging to find good textures of because it’s not something you can point-and-shoot. Without manual adjustment, photographs of snow will come out gray, because cameras look for light and dark and take the average when they are making their light readings. So we’re pretty pleased with how these pics came out and hope you like them as well.

Free Texture Pack: Lights

Inspired by this Wired How-To guide on camera toss photos, and it being that time of year with the Christmas tree all decorated with lights, I thought it would be fun to experiment with the idea, and also make some cool textures for backgrounds for holiday cards or wallpapers. Such is the story behind this texture pack, which isn’t really a texture pack because light isn’t texture, but we’ll call it one for convenience. We took 50 shots at different exposures, some with more ambient light and some in the dark, and trying a variety of different techniques for capturing light trails. Since there were so many shots, we’ve decided to split this pack up into 2 pieces, and we’ll post the second half next week, as well as an archive containing all 50 on Christmas morning. Why do it like this? Well, we figure, for the people who are going to use the textures for something holiday-themed this year, we’ll give it to you a little bit early so you have time to do whatever it is you’re going to do. If you can stand to wait, you’ll wake up Christmas morning and have a little present waiting for you to open from Arcane Palette.
