Okay I admit it.  I have been reading too many steampunk novels recently because this is what spilled out of my subconcious when I sat down to create a new wallpaper.  Clockwork, ancient tomes filled with long lost technology, a mixture of organic and cybernetic.  What will society look like when we’re all dust?  What will be “new technology” when artifacts like the telephone and the laptop are preserved in ancient history museums, when our civilization is thousands of years gone?

Included in the zip file are wallpapers in widescreen and fullscreen format, as well as iPhone and iPad counterparts.  We’ve also added a Twitter background.  The following resolutions are included:

Okay, so this month’s wallpaper has a bit more of a story.  Or, at least, it’s meant to imply that it has more of a story.

I wanted to do something spacey/sci-fi because it’s something we haven’t really done.  I started thinking about what a captain’s journal might look like if it wasn’t explicitly limited to just handwritten text.  What if it was sort of like a cross between a journal and an iPad (or, as Steven Fry noted, the closest thing, thus far, to a real, live Hitchiker’s Guide to the Galaxy).  What I had in mind was something that was both futuristic and retro, and with that in mind, I designed Captain’s Log…

This is the first time, also, that we’ve included a wallpaper for an iPad/tablet (of course, it was never really an issue before since they previously didn’t exist).  Time will tell if this becomes a regular inclusion but, given the booklike nature of the design, we included two different iPad wallpapers and two different iPhone wallpapers (as well as calendar and non-calendar versions of each).  Captain’s Log is available in the following resolutions:

This background combines two things I love: watercolor and paisley blooms spread across a subtly textured paper as if to signal the arrival of Spring in all her glory, daffodils, tulips, songbirds and sunshine spreading from her fingers.  I wanted to use watercolor because it is so fun to look at, with bright colors and whole ranges of different fascinating textures.  It especially feels right to me in the spring and summer months, with it’s carefree and vivid airiness.  Paisley designs celebrate spring and growth too.  Paisley began in India and Persia and is a representation of a mango fruit, a decadent growing treat that is much anticipated.  It’s a design that is always recognizeable but can be altered and adorned in infinite different ways, but is always intriguing with details and curves.  This background is my ode to spring.  Please come and brush the cobwebs from the sky with me!
