Okay I admit it. I have been reading too many steampunk novels recently because this is what spilled out of my subconcious when I sat down to create a new wallpaper. Clockwork, ancient tomes filled with long lost technology, a mixture of organic and cybernetic. What will society look like when we’re all dust? What will be “new technology” when artifacts like the telephone and the laptop are preserved in ancient history museums, when our civilization is thousands of years gone?

Included in the zip file are wallpapers in widescreen and fullscreen format, as well as iPhone and iPad counterparts. We’ve also added a Twitter background. The following resolutions are included:

The art of Jenevieve Hubbard

We’ve been wanting to talk about art more. As artists, we’re always interested in new and innovative things that other artists are doing. Occasionally that applies to websites, but occasionally that applies to, you know, real art — tangible art you can look at and (possibly) touch and smell and experience. I’m hoping that this post represents the first in a series of posts about art and artists. Stuff we like and would like to share.

Jenevieve Hubbard is a local artist in Salt Lake City. While originally from Cedar City, Utah, she spent much of her childhood in a native traditional village in Alaska, and absorbed the sights, sounds, smells and stories of the Y’upik people.

Her multimedia art caught our attention because she often uses unconventional materials like dirt, tea and india ink. Her latest body of work, titled Narrow Passage, uses embroidered silk carved into wood panels. If you’re in the Salt Lake Area you should consider checking out her show at the Charley Hafen Gallery.

We’re happy to provide content that people find interesting or useful. And lately, interesting or useful includes texture packs, blogger templates, and desktop wallpapers. We used a complex system of fake math incorporating pageviews and downloads to come up with this top 10 list of our most popular content:

10. Free Texture Pack: Beach

With so many great textures out there, and great texture resources, there is often huge gaping holes in themes and subject matter that seem so obvious when you’re walking around and looking at your environment. This Beach texture pack was an attempt to close up one of those holes and we’re glad other people have found it useful.

9. Web Design Cost Calculator

The web designer cost calculator started out as a tool adapting the calculations discussed in a post in Smashing Magazine into a spreadsheet from which we could derive quotes to give to our own clients. After finishing the spreadsheet, we decided to make it available to everyone and we’re glad that so many people have found it useful as well.

8. Free Blogger Template Pack: Steampunk

Adapted from a WordPress theme used on jazzsequence.com for a long time, this template pack includes variations of the same basic template and layout with different geek and steampunk background images.

7. Free Blogger Template: dear Audrey

A feminine Blogger template that’s not too girly, this design has a vintage letter-writing theme that we like quite a lot.

6. Free Desktop Wallpaper: urbanshamanism

A dark and mysterious wallpaper, this design played with mysticism and the spirit realm and tried to adapt those to a warm, grungy, urban environment.

One of our favorite wallpapers, this started out as a present for Chris from Erin which we adapted and made available to everyone.

Coming in 3rd and 4th respectively for downloads and pageviews are our brother and sister themes Polkadot Princess and Polkadot Prince. Essentially the gender-themed equivalent of its’ sibling, these two look great together and stand alone beautifully also. Our little 4 year old boy loves the Prince theme with the robots and airplanes, so we consider that a ringing endorsement!

2. Free Blogger Template: Last Bit of Summer

The warm colors of this Blogger template are thematic of the end of the summer and beginning of fall. We like this one so much, we were test-driving this template on one of our side project blogs for a while.

1. Free Blogger Template: Grandma’s Hat Box

Our first Blogger template and still the most downloaded by a wide margin. We took our penchant for creating unique web sites with real textures and applied that to the Blogger platform. We’re always excited to stumble on a site that uses Grandma’s Hat Box.

Free Twitter Background: Claim Jumper

Our very first Twitter wallpaper comes inspired by a few of our favorite things: Deadwood, Firefly, and the new Role-Playing Game-meets-First-Person-Shooter, Borderlands. The wallpaper has a rugged, wild west feel — which is one of our favorite styles to play with — and it looks great at most resolutions, even really high resolutions. When we design a Twitter wallpaper, our process is very similar to when we are designing a desktop wallpaper; that is, we design with the highest common resolution in mind. Therefore, the wallpaper is 1920×1200 pixels. You can use it as a desktop wallpaper as well, if you want, but the empty space in the middle really adapts better to a Twitter (or possibly Tumblr or Blogger) background. We used a great, aged paper texture found on DeviantArt as a dominant feature of the wallpaper.

This background can be downloaded and shared freely for personal use under a Creative Commons license.

Free Texture Pack: Wood Textures

This is a theme we revisit often: wood textures. You can create anything from really rustic or wild-west-y looks to really sophisticated and dignified designs with different types of wood textures. For that reason, it’s always good to have some good wood textures in your arsenal that you can pull out when you need them. Here’s a few we found, and we plan on adding to this set fairly often. this month’s calendar wallpaper goes back to our geeky roots. (well, for some of us, anyway.) it’s inspired by geeks on film in movies like hackers, the matrix, johnny mnemonic, and war games. if your more comfortable with a blinking cursor than a graphical interface, this wallpaper goes out to you.

as always, we have widescreen and standard versions available and this time we included a variant for your iphone as well. the zip file contains calendar and non-calendar versions in the following sizes:

Free Texture Pack: Random Objects

This pack is actually a bunch of random objects. We’ve had the benefit of staying at an awesome beach house in La Selva, California, and one of the things that makes this place unique is that it’s full of all this great vintage stuff. We didn’t have time to photograph nearly as much as we wanted to. Hopefully we’ll get a chance to visit again and add to this set.

Free Desktop Wallpaper: Coincidence

Coincidence was inspired by dreams and old photographs and the inbetween quality of Semptember, half summer, half fall. This is an exploration of how disparate things come together in new and fascinating ways when they collide in life and in design.

This month we have two calendar wallpapers, so if you didn’t like the last one, you can use this one. We even included iPhone backgrounds this time.
