I’ve been wanting to play with a steampunk-themed design for a while. So, I made that the goal of this month’s design. I started out with some watch pieces and I added in some grunge textures and played with the color palette. I really like the way the end result looks like rust, and has a real gritty quality to it.  This particular design started out just experimenting with some objects and textures with no particular end goal in mind.  My original plan was to do a WordPress theme or a Blogger theme, and I may still do both, or I may do something similar but new.

This wallpaper comes in all the usual sizes, with and without calendar.  We also included a Twitter background.

We’ve been working on some projects recently with a film noir feel, so have been doing quite a bit of visual research on the style. This wallpaper is inspired by classic and neo-noir films like Chinatown with a bit of a twist; rather than the typical, square jawed, male PI starring, I wanted to play with the idea of the classic film noir archetypes with a female lead instead.  We have a film noir wallpaper already, but this one is more about the look and aesthetics of the films rather than the 1940s and ’50s posters.

As always, we have widescreen and standard versions available and we’ve included an iphone version as well.  This wallpaper is calendar-only, and the zip file contains versions in the following sizes:

This wallpaper started out as an idea to just do a big, typographic design.  I was planning on just slapping some big LOREM IPSUMs in a really wide, blocky font and doing something cool with textures.  As I got into it, it seemed silly to have a calendar wallpaper that just said Lorem Ipsum, so I made the big, blocky text say September.  I had the idea that I wanted to fill at least part of the screen with some text, and “lorem ipsum” would have worked for that, but then that seemed silly if I was using a big September.  So, after some Googling, I learned about Eternal September, or the September that Never Ended.  I won’t recap the story behind Eternal September, you can read about it on Wikipedia, but I pulled the text from the jargon file and used that for the text on the wallpaper.
