1 bg 208x300 Graffiti Art and Design by DOCS Doing Only Crooked Shit is a design duo based in Sao Paolo and Leeds,  UK that does visual art, graffiti, design and illustration.  And they’re pretty  much awesome.  I discovered them via their Times New Yorker free font available on DaFont.  Their illustrations and graffiti art explore typography and pop culture in new and interesting ways.  Below are a few of my favorites.

The art of Jenevieve Hubbard

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

We’ve been wanting to talk about art more.  As artists, we’re always interested in new and innovative things that other artists are doing.  Occasionally that applies to websites, but occasionally that applies to, you know, real art — tangible art you can look at and (possibly) touch and smell and experience.  I’m hoping that this post represents the first in a series of posts about art and artists.  Stuff we like and would like to share.

Jenevieve Hubbard is a local artist in Salt Lake City.  While originally from Cedar City, Utah, she spent much of her childhood in a native traditional village in Alaska, and absorbed the sights, sounds, smells and stories of the Y’upik people.

Her multimedia art caught our attention because she often uses unconventional materials like dirt, tea and india ink.  Her latest body of work, titled Narrow Passage, uses embroidered silk carved into wood panels.  If you’re in the Salt Lake Area  you should consider checking out her show at the Charley Hafen Gallery.

Here is a collection of some of her previous work:

kidsblog3 kidsblogThe kidsblog is a site we did a long time ago and recently realized that it wasn’t in our portfolio.  kidsblog is mostly a photo and updates blog for our two kids.  As such, the only clients we had to really please were ourselves, our families, and the kids themselves.  Having previously used a pretty basic, out-of-the-box, Kubrick-based theme for the previous platform we were using, sblog.  When we decided to change the platform, we wanted to redesign the site to show off our personality a bit more, and the personality of the kids starring in the blog.

The biggest success story about the kidsblog theme is that when we finished and showed it to Gavin, our oldest, he was excited by the design and fascinated by the colors and shapes, the hands and the sun.  For us, that meant: mission accomplished!

kidsblog2 kidsblogWe really tried to create a design that was fun to look at, brightly colored, but also not distracting from the content.  We designed it for large resolutions in mind, but made it compatible for 1024 x 768 resolution for relatives with older computers (and provided a helpful walkthrough for changing your resolution for visitors who may come and not know what a 1024 x 768 resolution is).

Since its’ launch, we’ve updated various things to add functionality or keep the design fresh, most recently by adding IntenseDebate for commenting, and updating the design to be more of a widescreen theme.  Even though we don’t show it off as much anymore, this is still one of our favorite WordPress themes, with a unique blend of grunge and flair creating a feeling of something that is really dirty but also really fun — just like our kids!
