Okay I admit it. I have been reading too many steampunk novels recently because this is what spilled out of my subconcious when I sat down to create a new wallpaper. Clockwork, ancient tomes filled with long lost technology, a mixture of organic and cybernetic. What will society look like when we’re all dust? What will be “new technology” when artifacts like the telephone and the laptop are preserved in ancient history museums, when our civilization is thousands of years gone?

Included in the zip file are wallpapers in widescreen and fullscreen format, as well as iPhone and iPad counterparts. We’ve also added a Twitter background. The following resolutions are included:

Free Desktop Wallpaper: Clockwork Decay

I’ve been wanting to play with a steampunk-themed design for a while. So, I made that the goal of this month’s design. I started out with some watch pieces and I added in some grunge textures and played with the color palette. I really like the way the end result looks like rust, and has a real gritty quality to it. This particular design started out just experimenting with some objects and textures with no particular end goal in mind. My original plan was to do a WordPress theme or a Blogger theme, and I may still do both, or I may do something similar but new.

This wallpaper comes in all the usual sizes, with and without calendar. We also included a Twitter background.

Free Desktop Wallpaper: Hot Mess

This wallpaper is what happened when I set out to do something with our holiday lights texture photos. It’s colorful and fun and you can look at it many different ways, since there’s lots going on. I’ve been catching myself staring at it on my monitor many times, dreaming of a connect four game that is as attractive and chaotic as this looks.

Free Desktop Wallpaper: Dehli, 4am

This dark, noir wallpaper is currently adorning 3 monitors at Arcane Palette Central. The dark theme is easy on the eyes, especially after a long day staring at white pixels. It takes the classic smoky look and adds an interesting wallpaper texture, giving the feeling of sitting in a dark hookah bar, sipping a mango lassi.

This wallpaper also looks great as a Twitter background.

Free Twitter Background: Claim Jumper

Our very first Twitter wallpaper comes inspired by a few of our favorite things: Deadwood, Firefly, and the new Role-Playing Game-meets-First-Person-Shooter, Borderlands. The wallpaper has a rugged, wild west feel — which is one of our favorite styles to play with — and it looks great at most resolutions, even really high resolutions. When we design a Twitter wallpaper, our process is very similar to when we are designing a desktop wallpaper; that is, we design with the highest common resolution in mind. Therefore, the wallpaper is 1920×1200 pixels. You can use it as a desktop wallpaper as well, if you want, but the empty space in the middle really adapts better to a Twitter (or possibly Tumblr or Blogger) background. We used a great, aged paper texture found on DeviantArt as a dominant feature of the wallpaper.

This background can be downloaded and shared freely for personal use under a Creative Commons license.
